Fellow Birmingham-Southern grad, Watt Key, has released two acclaimed books in the last few years. My favorite, “Alabama Moon” is a story about a young boy raised in the woods of southern Alabama by his father in 1980. Suspicious of the trappings of civilization, the young boy, named Moon, is raised by his father to survive in the wilderness. After his father’s untimely death, Moon is forced to face the things he was taught to avoid and learns to navigate a sometimes ugly, sometimes beautiful, world.
Watt Key says he conceived the idea for this story during college while working on a project during Birmingham-Southern’s interim session. For a 2 week period, he and 2 friends survived the marshes of south Alabama with just each other and very few supplies. Details of their experience can be found on Watt’s website and make for fascinating reading. See http://www.wattkey.com. Click on “Alabama Moon: Why I did it”
Having attended BSC with Watt and graduating with his sister, Betsy, I cannot help but be thrilled to pieces with his success. His book is now a new movie starring John Goodman and Clint Howard. Release dates for mid-March and early April have been announced throughout central & southern Alabama as well as north Florida, but we are working to have a premiere in Huntsville as well!
Congratulations to the Key family and many more successes for Watt and his writing career! Go see “Alabama Moon”!
